Today we wanted to share a cute idea for organizing your kitchen spices. With every new recipe we end up collecting a new spice or two. Having all these options available is perfect for adventurous cooking but it can leave your kitchen cabinets looking cluttered! We decided to make our new spice storage magnetic so it could adhere to the side of a refrigerator, and we found these cute clear containers so you can easily see how much of each spice you have on hand.

Here's a before + after comparison. They're easier to store and easier on the eyes!

Step 1: Trace your container (
we got ours here) onto a sheet of magnetic paper. Step 2-3. Cut out the shapes and adhere them to the back of your spice container. Step 4. Cut a piece of label paper in a strip longer than your container. I also added hand drawn lines to my strips, just for fun! Step 5. Use the container to measure how wide your strip should be. Make a crease with your finger to mark the spot and then cut it out. Step 6. Pour each spice in and label it with a large, easy to read hand written font!
We did this in our kitchen, too. I saw the exact same DIY in the Washington Post several years ago.

Alton Brown uses this idea, but he uses self adhesive velcro strips and puts them on the inside of his cabinet doors to protect them from light !

I love this project! I did the same thing a few years ago for my spices. I bought the watchmaker's cases from Lee Valley, but I used pre-printed spice labels. I mounted a metal Ikea noticeboard thing on the wall, and stuck them all to that. They're right over our island, just in reach while we cook!
You can see them in this recent blog post:

So do you have a magnetic board you're putting these on? Or how do they stay on the cabinet door? Thanks!

I have these on my fridge but I put the labels on the back. Guests think its amazing that I can identify dried herbs but it's actually my secret labels!

TOTALLY need to do this! My spice cabinet is a mess. And because I'm so short I can't see anything! Put cinnamon instead of cumin in a dish once :)
