I LOVE classic Black and White cookies. In my mind it's a New York thing, probably mainly due to that Seinfeld episode and the first time I ever visited New York I had one for a treat. But you don't have to be in New York (or anywhere in particular) to enjoy these beautiful cookies—you can make them at home! I had so much fun baking and decorating my own cookies, and I decided to give them a little twist and add butterscotch to a few. :)
For the cookies I used a recipe from Annie's Eats (love her blog!). Makes about one dozen.
Needed: 2 cups cake flour, 1/4 teaspoon baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/2 cup (1 stick) of butter, 3/4 cup sugar, 1 egg, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract and 1/2 cup milk.
In a bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt; set aside. In your mixer cream together the softened butter and sugar for about 1 minute. Add in the egg and vanilla extract, mix until combined. Scrap down the sides of the bowl and add in half of the flour mixture. Mix, then add half of the milk. Continue until you have combined everything. Each cookie should be about 1/4 cup of batter each. Bake at 375 F for 18-20 minutes, until the edges are brown and the centers are just done.
For the glazes you will need: 1/3 cup corn syrup, 1/2 cup water, 4 1/2 cups powdered sugar, 2-3 ounces chopped and melted dark chocolate, 2-3 ounces melted butterscotch chips.
In a pot combine the corn syrup and water over low/medium heat, stir as it cooks. Remove from and stir in 1 cup powdered sugar. Pour 2-3 tablespoons of this mixture into each of the bowls of chocolate and butterscotch, stir until well combined. If needed you can add a little more of the powdered sugar mixture if the chocolates are still too thick. Now add the remaining powdered sugar to the corn syrup/water mixture, one cup at a time, whisking to combine. Glaze your cookies and enjoy! xo. emma

I've never seen these before, they look kind of like a jazzy version of digestive biscuits. I like the look of the butterscotch variant.

Oh I love black & white cookies!! I tried one for the first time at Zaro's bakery in NYC and it was so good. I can't wait to make a batch for myself! :)

Where I'm from in NY, we called them "Half Moon Cookies" and traditionally had a chocolate cookie with buttercream frostings. SO GOOD. Drives me up a wall when they are called black and whites. ;-)
