Summer time has us in the mood for refreshing beverages. We love a good cocktail but there are plenty of delicious non-alcoholic drinks to be made as well! Currently we are loving Agua Frescas, which are a lighter version of fresh fruit juice. Here are two simple recipes for making your own Agua Fresca.
Watermelon and Mint Agua Fresca, makes 6-8 servings.
Needed: 8 cups seedless watermelon cubes, 2 cups water, 5 tablespoons honey or sugar, 1/4 cup lemon juice (plus a few slices for garnish) and mint sprigs.
In a blender combine the watermelon, water, sweetener of choice and lemon juice. Liquefy! You can strain this through a fine mesh sieve or leave the pulp in. Add mint sprigs and garnish with lemon slices.
Cantaloupe and Thyme Agua Fresca, makes 6-8 servings.
Needed: 8 cups cantaloupe cubes, 2 cups water, 5 tablespoons honey or sugar, 1/4 cup lime juice (plus a few slices for garnish) and thyme sprigs.

Yummy, these look so good.
Maybe I'll make them this weekend for the big EuroCup games! :)

Its strange, because Agua fresca means fresh water, but it looks delicious anyway!

I love melon in the summer, so these sound perfect - probably would be tempted to add a splash of rum! Unfortunately UK isn't hot yet...also wonder if these recipes could work as ice lollies!?

I have to admit, I've never even heard of agua fresca, but these both look so good! I'm a lemming for anything watermelon and I have a couple in the fridge, so it looks like that one's first (along with mint leaves from my windowsill!). <3

So cute! I'm mexican and this is a very trad2itional way to beat the heat here in Mexico.
The "agua fresca" can be made out of almost any juicy fruit: watermelon, lime, lemon, guava, strawberries, cantaloupe, pineapple, orange... you can try even Jamaica flowers (that happens to be known like "hibiscus"... never thought of it's name in other places!!: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hibiscus_tea), the recipe is very simple: just boil a bunch of jamaica flowers, then when the water gets all dyed (and flavored of course) mix this concentrate with more cool water, add sugar to taste, let it cool and/or add ice cubes.
This agua fresca is one of my favorites!!

watermelon agua fresca is always present at my job during the summer - the chefs (all mexican) make it nearly every day!

Agua fresca is what we drink every day in México!!! You can make it of any fruit!!! I love lime, lemon, strawberry, orange, tangerine, grapefruit...!!! And the best is jamaica!! It's a flower! The 3 more traditional are jamaica, tamarindo (a mexican fruit) and horchata (the rice beverage). They are so delish!!!
Love the mint and thyme thing, Emma!! :)
