We just adore whiskey gingers during the hot summer months. I had a few of these while on our trip to Hawaii last month so I think they will now be a "beach drink" in my mind forevermore. But I don't live near a beach. So I'll just take the beach memories for now. It is easy enough to combine store-bought ginger ale and whiskey for a quick whiskey ginger. But I love this recipe because the ginger taste is so much stronger! All you need to make your own homemade whiskey gingers is ginger syrup (recipe below), whiskey, club soda and if you're feeling fancy some candied ginger for garnish (instructions below). Let's get our ginger on folks!
Ginger Syrup, makes about 1 1/2 cups.
Needed: 1 cup water, 2 cups sugar, 2 cups grated and thinly sliced ginger root.
Grate and slice up your ginger, set aside. In a pot combine the water and sugar. Over medium heat stir until the sugar is dissolved. Now add in the ginger and simmer on low/medium heat for 30 minutes. Allow this to cool slightly and strain the syrup, reserving the ginger slices. Store this in a seal container in your refrigerator for up to a month.
Easy Candied Ginger, makes about 1 cup
Needed: the reserved ginger slices from making ginger syrup and 1/3 cup sugar.
Rinse off the ginger slices and pat dry. Dip each in the sugar and place on a paper towel. Allow these to dry out for a couple of hours. Use to garnish drinks or other foods. You can just eat these too, but they are quite strong. You have been warned.
To make your whiskey gingers combine 3-4 tablespoons ginger syrup, 2 cups club soda, and a shot of whiskey. Add ice and garnish with a candied ginger slice. You can adjust these to be as strong as you like. Or you can leave the whiskey out and still have a lovely ginger drink.

These cocktails are RIGHT up my alley!
But hold up one second - 2 cups of club soda to 1 shot of whiskey? That can't be right or it would be the weakest drink out there. Maybe just the other ingredients in the glass first and then top with soda?
Can't wait to try (a much stronger ;) version!

Yum! Whiskey Gingers are always my first drink out on the town. I'll have to try making my own for a night in with fresh ginger now. :)

Hmm that's a dilemma. I don't really like whiskey, it burns my whole mouth. I swear, I can feel it going down the esophagus. However, and here comes a good however, I pretty much adore the lemony taste of ginger. I use it in my teas, my food, my sweet delights and so on. I really wonder what this combination would be like. Probably something like KABAAAM for my tongue and brain! :)

A: yea.. it really does depend on your glass size. We don't like to make these super strong... but that part is totally up to your taste! XO
