I don't know why, but it took me a while to get into the "coffee table decor" area. I've only recently started collecting a few fun coffee table books to keep out for guests to look through, but I really like having little things like that out to help make my living room a more welcoming area. I thought a little tabletop game would also be nice to keep people entertained and be a conversation piece. I saw a really cute tic tac toe game the other day, and I thought it would be fun to make one myself by creating whatever shapes I wanted for the "X" and "O" pieces out of clay. Turns out, not only was it fun to make, it was also pretty easy and fast as well. So that's a double win for me!
Supplies:
–oven bake clay
-small cookie cutters in your desired shape
-clay knives or X-Acto knife
-rolling pin for the clay (nonstick is best)
-wooden square board (check your local craft store for precut boards)
–thin copper foil tape
-white spray paint
Roll out your oven bake clay to about 1/8"-1/4" thick. Take your cookie cutter and cut out your shapes. If you can't find a cookie cutter exactly the right size, you can lightly press the cutter onto the clay and then use a clay or X-Acto knife to trace and cut the lines a little bigger or smaller as needed. I added a thin black line of clay for the middle of the mouth. For the eye pieces, I didn't have a cookie cutter that I liked, so I made the black shape myself and used a large straw to punch an eye hole in the white clay oval.
You'll need to make 5 pieces of both shapes so either team has enough to win the game. Bake the clay according to the instructions and glaze the pieces with a matte sealer if desired.
Paint your square board white and allow the paint to fully dry. Cut four equal length pieces of the copper foil tape and create your game lines with the tape.
Now you're ready to play your game!
I think this final game is simply adorable! You can make whatever shapes you want for your custom pieces, and if you want a more traditional look, you can use alphabet letter cutters to make your "X"s and "O"s as well. All of a sudden, a simple game of tic tac toe sounds like so much more fun! What shapes would you make for your game? xo. Laura
